How the cycle works
Statistics Canada publishes the register twice a year, with a lag. Each release reflects the state of the register at its reference period, not the date you download it.
We build from the most recent release. Municipal open data, where a municipality publishes it and its licence permits redistribution, is refreshed monthly and is the faster path to recent construction — see choosing between them.
There is no change file
We publish from the current release only. Historic extracts are not retained, so there is no diff, no change log per record, and no way to ask what moved between two releases.
That is a real limitation and worth planning around. If you need to compare releases, keep your own copy of each one as you download it — once a release is superseded here, it is gone.
What changes between releases
Addresses appear as the register validates them, and are removed as sources retire them. Positions change where a contributing source improves. Because we do not retain prior builds, none of that is visible as a labelled change — a record is either in the current file or it is not.
